What we are looking for

Original short stories in the genres of  Horror, Dark Fantasy, and Speculative fiction.

Short Fiction Guidelines

• Submit your work in standard manuscript format to submissions at blacktreacle.ca with the following subject line: SUBMISSION: TITLE,WORDCOUNT . Attach your story in DOC,DOCX, or RTF format.
• Include a basic cover letter in your email. State your name, story title, byline, address, and any relevant publishing credits.
• We are looking for pieces that run between 1500-5000 words. Please query first if you have a longer piece.
• Failure to follow the above guidelines will result in an auto-rejection.
• Payment is a flat-rate of $50.00 CAD by Paypal only.

We will normally acknowledge your submission within 48 hours. All submissions are reviewed within 60 days. Please feel to query on the status of your submission if you have not heard from us after 60 days have elapsed.

Reprints

Black Treacle is not accepting unsolicited reprints at this time.

Non-Fiction

Original articles (1500-5000 words) of interest to our readership. We are looking for a wide variety of topics, including: genre history discussion, essays on the writing process, advice for writers, traditional/self-publishing experiences, etc … We pay a flat rate of $50.00 CAD.

Poetry

Black Treacle is not accepting unsolicited poetry at this time.

Rights and Rules

1. Do not submit more than one story at a time. We do allow simultaneous submission but please be sure to notify us in your cover letter that the piece is under another editor’s consideration.

2. If you’ve had a story accepted, please do not submit again for at least six months from publication date. If you submit before then we will acknowledge receipt but will not review the story until six months elapse.

3. Please, no quotes from songs, stories, etc… that are not in the public domain.

4. For both original fiction & non-fiction, we buy first world rights exclusive for three months. first world electronic rights exclusive for six months, and non-exclusive anthology rights for twenty-four months.

Art Submission

Black Treacle is looking for original art work for the cover. We do not commission so please send us a link to your online portfolio. Pay-rate is $50.00 CAD for digital reprint rights.
