Publication Schedule & Pay Rate Changes

Starting today, Black Treacle will be moving to a bimonthly publication schedule. Here are the release dates for the remaining issues of 2013:

Issue #3 – Tuesday, June 4th 2013
Issue #4 – August 6th, 2013
Issue #5 – October 1st, 2013
Issue #6 – December 3rd, 2013

The decision came about as a combination of factors, but the prime reason was submission volume– We are just not getting enough yet to be able to put out an issue every month.

We will revisit this choice in 2014.

PAY RATE

With the lower frequency of publication, we’ve decided to up the pay rate to 25.00 CAN for both fiction & non-fiction pieces (You know we are open to non-fiction submissions, right?).

WE ARE OPEN FOR NON-FICTION SUBMISSIONS

We are now open for non-fiction submissions and will be publishing at least one piece a month starting with our March/April issue.

What are we looking for?

Original articles (1500-5000 words) of interest to our readership. We are looking for a wide variety of topics, including: genre history discussion, essays on the writing process, advice for writers, traditional/self-publishing experiences, etc … We pay a flat rate of 25.00 CAD.

If you interested in submitting something, send a query letter to nonfiction at blacktreacle.ca with the subject line TITLE.

We’re looking forward to reading your queries.

First The Bad News …

Publication of the new issue is being delayed until April 2nd, 2013. Submissions were rather slow this month, so it’s our hope that with a few extra weeks, we can procure some more stories. We will deliver a double issue (March/April) on April 2nd, 2013.

So on to the Good News!

We prattled on about a special announcement in the upcoming issue a couple weeks ago. Since it’s being delayed, we’ve decided to make the announcement today.

Starting with our March/April issue we will be open for non-fiction submissions and will be publishing at least one piece a month.

SOME UPCOMING DISTRIBUTION CHANGES, A COVER, AND A TEASER

In an effort to ensure the maximum audience for Black Treacle we have decided to publish on Amazon starting with the March issue.

We are still committed to delivering Black Treacle for free. The Smashwords edition will always be free upon release and distributed to the major retailers (Kobo, B&N, Sony, Apple, etc).

Since Amazon doesn’t offer an option for free distribution (other than KDP select), it will be released for 0.99.

We have a special announcement planned for the March issue regarding a change in our submission needs. We’re very excited about this change and can’t wait to share the full details.

Table of Contents for First Issue

It’s been a hectic few weeks here at Black Treacle, and, after wading through a lot of submissions, I am very pleased to finally get the Table of Contents up for our first issue:

Rattlesnake Eyes” by Josh Reynolds
Amy” by K.T. Bryski
A Little Piece of Heaven” by Rik Hoskin
Ascending” by F.J. Bergmann
Rain Gods” by Jeff Barr

The date for release is Tuesday, February 12th, 2013, so keep your eyes out for an official announcement.

We are still looking for writers for our upcoming issues, Check out our Submission Guidelines for details.

Call for Submissions Update

The slush pile at Black Treacle has been steadily building but we’re striving to keep on top of it. We are averaging about a 2 day turnaround on submissions and hoping to maintain that. We know waiting is always painful, so we want to ease that pain :).

We’ve also came across a few good candidates for our first issue, selections that represent our major genres ( dark fantasy, horror, spec-fic ), so look forward to a table of contents in the next couple of weeks.

One thing that has been really disappointing is that we have received barely any submissions from Canadian writers– Where are you guys?

Anyway, we’re on track for our February release date. Specific dates to follow.
